At the risk of being accused of self-promotion... Have a look at the INX
live CD linked in my .sig :) Start with watching the slideshow at:

http://inx.maincontent.net/album/1.png.html

Others have mentioned quite a few apps...

There is also the fbi program, which is a console-only image viewer
( included in INX) The associated fbgs program displays pdf, too.

A couple of other file managers : linm, vifm
Graphical browsing with svga or framebuffer: links2 -g ( also called as
xlinks2)

Currently "INX" has no hard drive installer, but this is being worked on.
The new installer will be simple to begin with - currently it completely
wipes the hard drive and installs the INX system, which is actually Ubuntu
7.04 underneath. We have an installer working in qemu, ( or virtualbox),
for anyone interested in playing with the install script and testing it.

INX will probably continue to be 7.04 for the moment, since the Gutsy and
Hardy kernels seem to have problems with the frame-buffer. I am also
looking at solutions to that issue.
