Glad you got it working. I wonder if it's related to this bug report:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/fedora/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/155372
  http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=82605

Other possibilities:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/164170
[NonfreeKernelModules: fglrx]
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/+bug/148608

If not, you might consider filing a separate bug so that the developers
can have a look:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/openoffice.org/

They most likely will tell you that they are not responsible for
restricted drivers (they are not), but you never know...

http://www.openoffice.org/issues/show_bug.cgi?id=82605
indicates that this has been fixed in standard OOo 2.3.1
(Ubuntu OOo is actually a Novell ximian fork of OOo, google for
"openoffice +ximian +ubuntu" - also see http://go-oo.org/).

If you want to give standard OOo a try, here are the instructions:
