Does Grub return an error message?
If the kernel starts to boot, how far does it get? Try booting with the
'no quiet' and 'no splash' option to see more output.
It seems to me that the only difference between 'normal' and 'recovery'
is that recovery goes into single user (super user) mode. This happens
_after_ the kernel is booted so maybe the prob is the splash option?
