network connected but...

I'm running gutsy on my 1.3 gig AMD w/80 gig hdd and 1 gig memory.  My 
other networked computer is a winXP unit and from there I can access all 
my shared files on the Ubuntu machine but I get only a windows network 
icon on the Ubuntu machine.  I had access to my windows files until I 
allowed it to update and they just disappeared.  I'm a newbie and will 
appreciate any assistance.
