I do not understand this difference

Hi,

I got a Toshiba Laptop and a docking station.

Using multiple partitione I installed ubuntu and kubuntu. Both offered
to install the proprietary driver for the nvidia card. Using Ubuntu I
could use the compiz effects, using kubuntu, no way to get for instance
the 3D cube or the expose-feauture working. I do not understand why one
can and the other cannot, since both have the same basis.

I plugged the notebook into the docking station, but the ports (USB eg)
or the internet connection were not recognised. I reinstalled ubuntu
while the notebook was plugged in the docking station, and then it does
work.

I also tried to hook up an external monitor, as well analog as digital,
first directly connected to the port of the notebook, and afterwards
connected to the docking station. I could not get both displays workable
under ubuntu and the resolution was very bad. Also the resolution of the
system was completely off when I disconneted the external display, even
after a reboot.

My questions are:
How should one install a system using the docking station?
How do I get both displays workable? I would like to displays (cinerama
effect?) as well as clonign the primary screen since I also need the
notebook for my classes and for projection of beamer presentations. (I
haven't yet tried to connect the system to the projector,) some advice?

Tx/Alain
