using SCIM on Kubuntu gutsy for Japanese input

I am having trouble using SCIM.  I think I've followed the
instructions correctly on this link:

However, the system tray scim does not show any input modules when I
click the left button.

Anyone have any suggestions or troubleshooting ideas?
