Mic issues revisited

Hello Everyone:
I have an Acer Aspire 5100 notebook PC on which I installed Gutsy a
few weeks ago. So far, just about everything has been absolutely
flawless and I can't ever see myself going back to Windows. The one
thing, however, that just doesn't seem to work is audio input.
The Aspire has three ways to get sound into the system: a built-in
mic, a line in port, and a mic port. No matter how I try to get sound
into the system, it simply won't record anything. I've gone into the
mixer and made sure all the levels were at their max, I've selected
different inputs (Capture, Capture1, etc) and still nothing.
Am I missing something here or am I just to kiss sound goodbye on this laptop?
Thanks!
