I've successfully copied an entire an installed Windows partition to a 
partition on my external hard drive using
the copier shown in:
         http://www.roadkil.net/unstopcp.html
and there's also a gz version copy of "unstopcp" for Linux which I'll 
try next.. if there isn't something
more directly applicable to ubuntu

unstopcp is very easy to use,  just enter the names of the source and 
destination partitions.

It takes quite a long time to copy an installed Windows so I imagine 
it'll be the same for copying
ubuntu.
