Sound has mysteriously vanished

I'm running Gusty i386.

I'm not sure what happened (or how) but I've suddenly lost sound.  It
must of happened after an upgrade or a program install.

I've tried all the usual tricks (alsamixer, asoundconf) and nothing
seems to work.  The sound card itself is just fine (I dual boot with
Windows and it works there).

What do I do now?
