Open the case, plug in a standard Cd-rom with Ubuntu CD, leave it 
hanging out, install OS, remove CD-rom, continue on as though nothing 
happened.

Unless you istalled Windows from a *burned* cd, that doesn't rule out 
the CD-rom at all.  (in fact, since that proves your memory is probably 
allright, all signs point right to that.)
