I don't fully understand the alternatives system, but I believe there is
a config file that lists what belongs to what alternative. Just
symlinking something into a directory won't cut it unless the
alternatives system is WAY smarter than I believe it is. But I suppose I
could find out... :-)

Hm, well, here have been quite a few releases of 1.4 since 1.4.2-02.
1.4.2 is at subrelease 15 now. But that might be a Blackdown thing
rather than a Ubuntu thing. I shouldn't have referred to ANY 1.4 version
as bleeding edge though :-)
