Michael,
I honestly don't know how you managed to get ferm installed, but I can't
imagine how it could have been installed as a part of a standard Edgy
==> Feisty upgrade if http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading had been
followed. You didn't follow those, so my guess is that it was installed
from your other method.
You can check your history files in Synaptic to see if it was installed
during your upgrade, or had been installed previously. If it *was*
installed during the upgrade, and you had no instance of it installed on
your system previously, then I'd recommend that you file a bug:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/update-manager/
as it would be (IMHO) a security issue if updates installed new programs
from universe without cause. That will also get the problem in front of
the developers/maintainers of update-manager rather that users.
Please don't blast the list with foul language. It's uncalled for. If
you'd like to blast away, my email address is valid & I'm happy to try
and help you sort this out off list. I'm no expert in Ubuntu/linux in
any way shape or form, just another user, but happy to help if I can.
Gary
