Webcams and Building software

I'm still working on my new webcam. Finally have it running with the
uvc driver and W4L2 It seems that the problem is that much of the
application software works with W4L and not W4L2. (Ubuntu Feisty, the
cam worked - I just could not tell!!!)

Questions:

Does anyone know of a good application that will allow the recording of
video, with sound, snapshots, otherwise controlling the cam that is W4L2
compliant?

Is anyone familiar with wxCam?

I intend to give wxCam a try, but here are my compile issues:

The dependencies include:

1. wxWidgets version 2.6 or 2.8 Both appear to be in the
repositories. Anyone know what of the many pieces and parts need to be
installed?

2. GTK+ version 2.2.x . No surprise, the version of GTK+ in the
repositories is 2.0.x. If I track down and install the 2.2 version, do
I need to uninstall the version from the repositories first? Or
"upgrade". Is this risky? How would I go back if I needed to?

Any thought anyone can share greatly appreciated.
