Sorry about the excess in the post b4. Also had to edit /etc/modules and and 
in piix there to make it stick after rebooting

Prob fixed with some help from Andre. He pointed me to

which gave instructions to run as root the following commands

modprobe piix
update-initramfs -u

Mind you they forgot the -u
