Hi Guys
Prob fixed with some help from Andre. He pointed me to
http://linux.dell.com/wiki/index.php/Ubuntu_7.04/Issues/CD_media_not_recognized
which gave instructions to run as root the following commands
modprobe piix
update-initramfs -u
Mind you they forgot the -u
