You can get around cdrecord's 5-second delay by using cdrskin instead.
It can handle exactly what you are trying to do and its command line is
compatible with cdrecord.

apt-get install cdrskin

should work for you, or if not, you can get the latest release from

http://scdbackup.sourceforge.net/cdrskin_eng.html

Also, since you are a software engineer, you may also wish to check out
the library that powers cdrskin called libburn. If it doesn't suit your
needs it can easily be adapted. More info is available at
