Backup & Restore of an entire Ubuntu system

Actually the weird issue is concerning the partitions... Seems like some
information regarding them got corrupted. This means that I can safely
boot into both systems, but when I try to access the HD using gparted
(or Partition Magic from XP) there are no partitions shown.
