Boo hiss, no it didn't. What I didn't know was that the "enable
restricted driver" dialog changes the driver in the xorg.conf file to
"fglrx"! (I thought it twiddled a bit in the ATI hardware). So I
actually had the fglrx driver there.

I give up: Maybe someday I'll try installing Xgl, right now it seems way
too much time to invest for a bit of eye candy.

I just tried radeon/xinerama for fun, since I was up to my eyeballs in X
configs anyway. It works OK, but doesn't handle different monitor
resolutions very well. Also there doesn't seem to be any way to control
window placement, which takes a bit of the usefulness out of it.
Metacity doesn't seem to quite understand it - when I go to hide the a
task panel, it slides over to the other screen. Rather like an ostrich,
it thinks I can't see it :-)

With fglrx and xinerama the cursor on the external monitor disappears,
which is even MORE useless. Ah well - back to dual desktops :-)
