XFree86-DRI missing on display :0.0 and beryl or desktop effects

I've been trying to get desktop effects and/or beryl working under
feisty on a sony laptop.  I keep get:

Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".

lspci gives:

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Radeon Mobility M6 LY

fglrxinfo gives:

Xlib:  extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".
display: :0.0  screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.4 (1.5 Mesa 6.5.2)

I've been trying to follow the how-to files online, but nothing gets
rid of this error.  Choosing desktop-effects just says that it is
unable to be started.  beryl-manager just gives up and goes by
metacity.


Suggestions?
