Are there softmodem solutions supported in any ubuntu repository?

UPDATE:
I'm using an ALSA + slmodemd solution, but it doesnt work.

I followed the instructions at
  https://help.ubuntu.com/community/DialupModemHowto
Then I took the manual way.
That is, in a terminal I launch
  slmodemd  -c ITALY --alsa hw:0,6
(the device number is correct) and in another I use
  wvdial
(having configured wvdial.conf) but I'm having the
infamous message:

error: period size 48 is not supported by playback (64).


Why? What to do?
