Are there softmodem solutions supported in any ubuntu repository?

Hi,
it's not just the fact that you have to go out and buy a serial modem.
I have been thinking of upgrading my machine, and it's now getting very 
hard to find a board with a serial port on it.
Serial and parallel ports are going the way of the Dodo and floppy disks..
Have to buy a pci serial card too, to be able to use the serial modems I 
have, on quite a few new motherboards now.
No hope of getting broadband here, at least not in my lifetime. :-)
