I had the same issue after attempting to upgrade to edgy. I "fixed" it 
by removing the 'quiet' option on the grub entry <shrug>

(That said, after recently purging - rather than removing - all the 
residual files and kernel packages from dapper, I notice that the login 
manager now loads without the above hack. More shrugs!)
