This may sound totally redundant because you have already stated you
have tried these things, but were you sure to run:
gksu "update-manager -c"
Did you verify the MD5 sum of your download? Burn at the lowest possible
speed? Is there any hardware on your computer that is "experimental" in
linux?
Have you installed a bunch of extra's from external repositories?
