Are there softmodem solutions supported in any ubuntu repository?

Hi all

I have a internal modem in a laptop.
Having installed feisty, it seems that the modem
is not recognized (there is no /dev/modem)
so I think it is a softmodem.

I would not want to have to play with kernel
modules and recompilation of the kernel or
what else, because I would like to be able to
use the usual update management in feisty.

I woul prefer to buy an external compatible modem
if it is needed.

But before, I ask, is there any kind of solution
for softmodems supported in ubuntu repositories?
Universe, multiverse, thirdparties, any...

At the very moment, I don't know the exact
chipset of the internal modem.
