removable discs: getting rid of the desktop symbol

Not sure about the icons, i'd like to know that also.

I think with your external drive it may be shown in /etc/fstab. Edit 
fstab and remove the line to do with your external drive. Doing 
something like ALT+F2 and then put in "gksu gedit /etc/fstab" without 
the double quotes. Be careful what you do here because you are able to 
make a right mess out of your system. It's always recommended to make a 
backup of fstab first by doing something like "sudo cp -av /etc/fstab 
/etc/fstab.bk"
