If you want to add a script to /etc/init.d, use /etc/init.d/skeleton as 
an example.  See "man update-rc.d" to change the configuration of each 
runlevel (for Ubuntu 6.06 or earlier; I understand that later Ubuntu 
versions use a different startup method.)  For the files in 
/etc/default, read the man page of the corresponding application.
