I'll give you a quick how-to, based on the podcast reciever I use
(iPodder), and one of the podcasts I listen to, Lugradio.

1) Install ipodder (Applications, Add/Remove, type ipodder in the
search box. You may need universe and multiverse enabled. Tick the box
next to it, then OK)

2) After installation is complete, go to the website of the podcast
you wish to recieve. (In this example, lugradio.org) and find the
feed. On lugradio.org, this is on the right navigation bar ("Podcast
feed"). I want the MP3s, so I click MP3. This links to the RSS feed,
so we copy the URL from the location bar
(http://lugradio.org/episodes.rss)

3) Open up ipodder (Applications, Sound and Video, iPodder)

4) On the "Subscriptions" tab, click the add new feed button (White +
in a green circle)

5) Paste the URL from firefox into the URL box, then click Save.

6) Hit the big green "check for new podcasts button"

7) After each episode finishes downloading, click the green symbol
next to it to listen to it in XMMS. (You may need to install this if
you don't already have it)

Sorry if this comes across as a bit dumbed-down, I'd rather
oversimplify than overcomplicate.

HTH
