Well, it appears that my puzzlement was due to the fact that I was looking
in the wrong places, and missing the obvious ;-)

I needed to configure the sharing plugin in Rhythmbox, which I somehow
missed.... ( /me cleans spectacles)

The reason for Avahi's silence was that, in fact, it was correct that I
had no compatible services running. When I started Ekiga on one machine,
the other immediately recognised it.

Apologies for answering my own mail, and for being  so absurdly stupid !
