DHCP oddness

System|Administration|Synaptic System Manager|Search|Network
remove the network manager & network-manager-gnome

Reboot.

Once you've done that, reconfigure your network via the standard
System|Administration|Network settings.

then

sudo dhclient

Reboot.

You should be fine thereafter.

Unless you have wireless connections, removing the above will greatly
enhance your life :-)
