Startup / Shutdown Issues

Found my problem, though not its cause.  I had uninstalled my window
manager, gdm.  How that happened I don't know, save to say I'm certain I
didn't do it proactively.  Reinstalled gdm, and my problem seems to be
fixed.  May yours be solved as easily ..
