sound card

I have an HP Pavilion 8765c (900 Mhz AMD processor with 256MB RAM) loaded with Ubuntu 6.06.1 desktop.  The original sound card/modem was not detected so I swapped it with a Creative Labs PCI sound card.  Ubuntu recognized the device and automatically loaded the driver for the new sound card, i.e., the sound card is now visible in Device Manager.  Juk was installed and I added a few MP3 songs to the Collection List to test the audio playback.  When I pressed the play button nothing happens.  What should I check?
