I don't claim more knowledge, but I've been trying to think of something
useful that esd does on my system - apart from system sounds, which I find
irritating anyway, I can't think of anything :)
The new version of Skype is alsa-aware, by the way, so it's now possible
to run skype and have other sounds simultaneously.
If anyone can give use cases where esd is still required, that would be
interesting. I imagine it may be hardware-specific since some sound cards
can't use alsa with dmix directly, if I understand correctly...
