Not immediatelly.  Let me see if I remember the problem correctly: if
there exists a particular file in /etc/bash_completion.d, then whenever
you try to log in, you get the login screen back.

You could try logging into a text console (Ctrl+Alt+F1) and looking for
error messages in the .xsession-errors file in your home directory.
Other than that, I have no ideas.
