Python rocks and is a core component of Ubuntu that should be around in
a default installation, no need to install it manually. There also are
tools like "spe" around to provide you with a convenient development
environment.
However, there are a few things to be thought about when talking about
application development, maybe Python is not the language of your
choice after all. What sort of software do you want / intend to build?
