Thanks, I'd already done quite a bit of searching, and found a nice CD
image that, when booted, removes either or both of the 1802 problem and
another issue (that I didn't have) where the Thinkpad complains about
too many devices. However, it shouldn't have been necessary, because the
card was the one IBM originally supplied in the laptop, and had worked
flawlessly for years. The problem lies deeper.
The CD seemed to do it's job, and I can now boot again, but either the
miniPCI card is dead or there is still some other problem, as it doesn't
seem to be detected now at all. Oh well - I want to use the laptop as a
wired server anyway...
I am still fairly convinced that the Dapper install screwed something;
the timing is too exact to be coincidence.
