Hi, don't be too concerned about the ubuntu-desktop metapackage, if it's
removed you won't lose anything at all. The only way you could lose all
of gnome is if you install ubuntu-desktop using aptitude, but I'm
assuming you installed with gnome already, and if you installed it with
synaptic or apt-get then it still won't kill all of gnome (this is dues
to differences in the way aptitude handles dependencies and
manually/automatically install packages).
