I run my website on ikiwiki.  It uses markdown as its native
markup language.  Its really easy to learn and when you
learn html you can inline that.  It uses css so you can use
that to customize the look of your pages.  And, it outputs
valid xhtml.  Overall I recommend it for new web developers.
 Writing your own html is boring and a waste of time imo.
