Text mode display corrupted after dist-upgrade to Dapper

FWIW, I found that using vga= to set my resolution to 1600x1200 worked
fine until my X video driver (fglrx) kicked in, and I ended up with
the result you describe.  I had to back off to the next lower
resolution.
