Hi Greg,

I know that this is is an ubuntu list but when I failed to do
the purposed dapper install at a friend's gigabyte/SATA board, I
tried with knoppix (failed as well) and, finally used suse 10.1
and this worked IMMEDIATELY out of the box.

Perhaps you could give this a try, as well, if anything else
fails, including the instruction manual. ;-)))
