Thank you for your reply - plenty to look at.

I checked out the RestrictedFormats page and decided to try EasyUbunut
- but the software said that there was a problem to resolove and it
could not implement the packages. I suspect the problem is related to
this message I get when running python (and other software)

(synaptic:6784): Gdk-WARNING **: locale not supported by Xlib

(synaptic:6784): Gdk-WARNING **: cannot set locale modifiers

I don't know what these are all about - it doesn't stop my python
software development working so I have ignored them. I did try to
follow a thread on them but couldn't really follow it.

Then I did what you suggested, ran file, then vcl and mplayer from the
terminal and this is what I got :-

file henry2.avi

henry2.avi: RIFF (little-endian) data, AVI, 160 x 120, 12.00 fps,
video:

vlc

VLC media player 0.8.4 Janus

Sorry it is so long (kmplayer)

I don't have a slow pc pentium IV 2.6GHZ with 512MB and 128MB graphics
card - so I can't believe it is that.

Would be nice to solve this as I plan to buy a Canon Shureshot S3 and
one of its features is the ability to create movies (in avi format) as
well as take great still pictures - really looking forward to getting
this).
