Best thing I could say to do here is:

1. sudo adduser jatan audio

2. apt-get install gstreamer0.10-plugins-good (this may pull in other
packages)

3. go to System/Preferences/Sound and make sure that 'Enable software
sound mixing' is checked and make sure the correct card is listed under
'Default sound card'.

4. Press 'Alt+F2', enter 'gconf-editor' (without the quotes), and click
'Run'. Go to /system/gstreamer/0.10/audio/default and make sure
'audiosink' is set to 'autoaudiosink'. You might also set
musicaudiosink and chataudiosink are set to this, and videosink is set
to 'autovideosink'. This just sets the system back up to the
defaults.

If the above doesn't work, try logging out and back in.

It sounds like your group membership got messed up. Here are a list of
default groups for the first user created on the system:
adm
dialout
cdrom
floppy
audio
dip
video
plugdev
lpadmin
scanner
admin

New users are not added to these groups by default.
