Mac and Linux compatibility

Well, sharing files between Mac OS X and Linux can be accomplished
one of three ways:

Samba(Linux) - Samba(OS X)
NFS
Running netatalk on linux

I've found NFS to be my preferential way of sharing files. This
requires you to use the "insecure" option in /etc/exports on linux,
at least if you would like to be able to mount easily via Finder,
although there are more complex ways of dealing with NFS mounts on
Mac OS X (which NFSManager can make easy).

An easy way to make sure you're using samba is to press Cmd-K in
Finder, which will open up the "connect to server" window, and enter
in "smb://hostname-or-ip-address".
