:-) Horrible, isn't it. There used to be a great - and useful - 
animation in there, but, well, developers and their foibles, y'know. 
Hands up anyone that leaves that thing on.

Anyway

- right-click the taskbar
- Configure Panel
- Appearance
- Uncheck Enable icon mouseover abomination

- right-click the taskbar
- Add applet to Panel
- Select Show Desktop
- Add to panel
