Touchpad working sometimes.

Hi,
My touchpad sometimes stops working. The mouse cursor still moves, but
the buttons no longer change when I move it across them, and they do not
react when I click om them.
I have a laptop (Compaq presario V5000 series) with edgy installed. The
touchpad worked from the start (including scrolling), so I have not
altered the x-configuration file.
Sometimes it seems to me that gnome (or X) stops registering events from
the touchpad. The mouse cursor moves, but the buttons, menus etc. so not
respond to that (e.g. the text (tooltip?) normally displayed when
holding the cursor over the gnome-menus is no longer dispayed).
The keyboard still works, so I can start xev, and see that it does not
register any events when I move the cursor across it.
If I press alt-ctrl-F1 to switch to a text-login screen, and then
alt-ctrl-F7 to switch back, the touchpad is somehow "restarted" and
again works as expected, including scrolling. I have no understanding of
why, or of what I can do to diagnose the problem better.
Any help appreciated
Johan
