I just upgraded from Breezy to Dapper and I was having the same
problem, HOWEVER I'm using Xubuntu and its default terminal is xfterm.
I opened the xfterm help file and it turns out there's a configuration
parameter needed -- MiscBell=TRUE -- for some reason (contrary to the
documentation) it defaults to FALSE. If you are using xfterm, go to
the setup file ~/.config/Terminal/terminalrc (if it doesn't exist you
can create it). Change a few settings in the terminal so it can add
some lines of its own and then add the MiscBell=TRUE line just as
shown in the documentation.
If you ARE using Gnome Terminal, go to the Edit menu, choose Current
Profile... and the "Terminal Bell" checkbox is on the bottom of the
first tabbed panel. (On my system the Gnome terminal bell was on by
default, as expected.)
Let me know if that helps... and then... ask NOT for whom the bell
tolls -- it tolls for thee!
