Power Control on Desktop not working

My notebook just took a dive so I dragged out my latest backup and put it on
my Gateway desktop box and reconfigured X for it. Only one problem remains:
that of the Power Control module w/in Control Center. The monitor has been
shutting down properly but I cannot change the time. Nothing else seems to
work.

I have purged 'powernowd' and the Power Control still shows 'Laptop Battery'
and under that I have the msg, "Your computer seems to have a partial ACPI
installation. ACPI was probably enabled, but some of the sub-options were
not - you need to enable at least 'AC Adaptor' and 'Control Method Battery'
and then rebuild your kernel."

I have never, ever used Ubuntu on this Desktop box and do not care to start
from scratch for a temporary installation. I would, however, appreciate the
capability to suspend the box since it does 's'tandby' & 'hibernate' under
XP.

Need more info? Please ask.

Thanks...
