Fics is the Free Internet Chess Server, but i'm not sure whether the
server-software
they run is completely open, i do know that the add-on called timeseal
is closed-source
the easiest solution for you would be to install eboard (available in universe),
sign up at Fics, and then both connect to Fics and play against each other,
you need to have internet in that case, and have either port 5000 or
port 23 open
for running an open-source chess-server in your lan you can try this :
http://chessd.sourceforge.net/index-en.php
