Thanks for the tip.  Unfortunately this seems to make the problem worse
for me.  With the SiS in my laptop, putting that in freezes the system
entirely on coming back.  Beforehand I got borked video but everything
was still running.  I could even blind-type to switch to a console, log
in and do a sudo shutdown -r now and get my system back safely.  This
time I couldn't do that at all.  I had to do a power-down reset.
