automatic login

Hello All,
I have been using dapper without any trouble all these days. I tried to
use bum, disabling postfix, enabling freepops, etc.
But, I am not sure whether this has created the problem, ubuntu does not
login automatically now. I do not want to reinstall the system again.
When I try to launch 'gdmsetup', I get the following message.

Failed to connect to socket, sleep 1 second and retry
Trying failed command again. Try 2 of 5.
Failed to connect to socket, sleep 1 second and retry
Trying failed command again. Try 3 of 5.
Failed to connect to socket, sleep 1 second and retry
Trying failed command again. Try 4 of 5.
Failed to connect to socket, sleep 1 second and retry
Trying failed command again. Try 5 of 5.
  Command failed 5 times, aborting.
Could not access GDM configuration file.

Human login screen also does not get displayed. Some blue screen with
strange (of course, English) lettered screen is displayed.
I tried to edit /etc/gdm/gdm.conf adding my name to automatic login and
setting automatic login to true. But, no use.
Any suggestions, please. Thanks in advance.
Rajesh
