I think it comes down to what is perceived to be easier for them. Most people just want something that works, and works now. They don't want to learn anything. Click this and that and it all works. The thing that Windows has is software that for the most part is easy to install so almost 99% of the Windows buying public can install something they purchase at any store.

A recent article about security said - you cant train end users because they just don't care. They have work to do. They don't want to learn about firewalls and virus protection and this and that -> they have their focus elsewhere. Obviously written about businesses but I think that is true for just about everyone. They just want to DO their work.

But there will always be people who like to do a 'little' more. And that is great for distros like Ubuntu.
